What is periodontology?
Periodontology is a specialty of dentistry that deals with the treatment of diseases that occur in the soft and hard tissues surrounding the teeth. Gum diseases are inflammatory conditions that affect the teeth and surrounding tissues. It can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated easily. By treating gum diseases, natural teeth are protected, chewing is done more comfortably and the digestive system is regulated. Healthy gums are rose-dried pink and do not bleed during brushing. The early period of gum disease is gingivitis. During this period, the gums are red and bleeding. If it is not noticed and treated early, it progresses to gingival disease that causes serious bone loss, which called periodontitis. As the disease progresses, gum recession continues, teeth begin to move and may need to be extracted.
What are the symptoms of gum disease?
- Redness, bleeding and edema in the gums
- Gingival recessions
- Sensitivity of the root surfaces exposed as a result of gingival recession
- Pus coming from between the tooth and the gum
- Discoloration of the gums due to the accumulation of dental calculus
- Bad smell and taste in the mouth
- Looseness and displacement of teeth
What should be done for healthy gums?
- Teeth should be brushed at least 2 times a day.
- Dental floss should be used regularly.
- No smoking.
- Regular dental check-ups should be provided every 6 months and professional tartar cleaning should be performed if necessary.
Good oral and dental care reduces the formation of tartar by preventing the accumulation of dental plaque. Professional cleaning is the only way to get rid of tartar and should be done by dentists.
Gingival aesthetics (Pink aesthetics)
After the gums are made healthy, they are shaped to obtain a more aesthetic appearance. The gums are cut and brought into proper alignment.
In which cases is gingival aesthetics performed?
- If the gums appear too much when smiling,
- If the gum levels are in different alignments,
- If the color of the gums has become dark,
- In people who have problems caused by gingival recessions.
